Microsoft has taken the wraps off an amazing offer for UK and US students today.

Students in the UK and US with a valid email address (an email address given by the college or university, e.g. name@leeds.ac.uk) will be able to purchase Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional (upgrade versions) for £30 and $30 respectively. The offer will run until 3 January 2010 when the prices will revert to normal.

Read a entry i found on a blog ..it's quite nice if you want not to waste your time and money in finding right solution for your phones..

Hello Guys, this is my attempt to make JAVA work on this phone. I was able to do this one also successfully with help from my friend Dark Forest!! :) Thanks Mate .

OK so now the question is how to do the FIRMWARE UPGRADE & WHY TO DO IT?? Well for starters you canINSTALL JAVA on STAR as you would do on any Nokia or Sony Ericsson phone & second BUG FIXES. Now if you haven't encountered any bug on the phone I'll mention some. The message storage is suppose to be 500, but around only 200+ messages are stored in the phone & then it says inbox full. Also when you have an incoming call or outgoing you cannot see the number to which it is going (provided you have the number stored in your phonebook) When you have multiple numbers stored under single name this is a problem, this has been fixed as you get to see along with the name of the person calling you his/her number. 4 more Russian widgets have been added (If you know Russian good :D ). 3 new games :)

Now 2 things have changed (atleast for me) The "E" indicator which used to come up on the screen on the top to indicate if the GPRS session is active, is always there & second initially when I needed to use the gesture control on the phone I used to press the lock button slightly & the screen wouldnt get unlocked but just be in standby mode & i could write the character on the screen & it would work. This has changed, now in order to achive this I have to press the call pickup/call cut or the back button on the Star 3G & regarding the E indicator, Dark Forest has confirmed it, thats nothing to worry about. It just means that GPRS Edge is available on your network, it will turn red if connected to the net. That is normal with all open market firmware. :) So problem solved. :D

Now to get on with the Firmware Upgrade (Flashing)

1st -> You have to check if you have SIM LOCK enabled on your phone.Type *#7465625# and see. SIM LOCK SHOULD BE OFF. Do not proceed if you have it ON, get it to a shop & have it disabled.

2nd -> BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!! Your contacts, messages, pictures, wallpapers, ringtones, music, gprs settings etc.. (I have provided with GPRS setting for Vodafone Mumbai below)

3rd -> You will require USB cable (The one which came with your phone) & PC Suite. Make sure PC suite is installed before you start the process as it has the drivers necessary for communicating with your phone.Make sure the phone is communicating with your PC using PC Suite.

4th -> You need to download the firmware from Dark Forest's Site as shown below.

Side by side also download Multiloader from here

5th -> Now unpack the FIRMWARE files in a folder also make sure no program in your system start-up is occupying the COM ports. PC Suite will also cause a problem, so to fix it do as shown below.

Now that you have done this, switch off your phone, remove the battery, sim & micro SD. Place the battery back inside & press the volume down button,camera button & the power button all together. the phone will power up & will have a screen as shown below. In the mean time also restart you PC (This is very IMPORTANT)

Now that you PC is restarted connect the phone to the PC using the USB cable.

Now before going on further with the actually FIRMWARE UPGRADE(FLASHING) a disclaimer.

I HAVE NOT CREATED THIS METHOD NOR DO I TAKE CREDIT FOR IT. DARK FOREST & HIS TEAM ARE THE REAL INVENTORS , I AM JUST WRITING A METHOD SPECIFICALLY MENT FOR SAMSUNG STAR 3G WITH PERMISSION FROM DARK FOREST. IF IN THIS PROCESS YOU END UP SCREWING YOUR PHONE WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE. ALSO BY DOING THIS YOU ARE VOIDING YOUR WARRANTY FROM SAMSUNG.

Now thats clear, lets begin.

1st -> Open up MULTILOADER & select the options in the exact order as shown below.

2nd -> Now after selecting the MSM6275/MSM6280/MSM6290 option, select the option as shown below.

3rd -> Now that the BOOT LOADER files are in place lets proceed to FULL DOWNLOAD. Do EXACTLY as shown below.

4th -> Now with Rsrc1

5th -> The next step is VERY IMPORTANT, choose Rsrc2 (LOW) & not (MID). MID is know to have problems while booting the phone.

6th -> Now the Factory Setting files.

7th -> & finally the MASTER ROM.

8th -> At last the MULTILOADER should look like below, now click on the PORT SEARCH.

Once you have pressed PORT SEARCH, the COM PORT will come up in the filed shown, Click on DOWNLOAD.

Now sit back and wait, Multi loader will erase the rom and prepare it for rewrite in a matter of seconds. immediately after, it will begin the download process, this could take up to 20 minutes depending on you computers speed. After the process is complete, Your phone may restart on its own, this is ok. If your phones does not restart on its own, just remove the battery for a few minutes & reinstall your sim and memory card and you are ready to go! You may need to manually enter your wap and MMS settings but some providers sim will reset automatically.(I have provided with VODAFONE MUMBAI settings below)

Dark Forest's has recommend preforming a hard reset after a flash. This just makes sure every thing is cleared out and the firmware loads clean but this is not required.(In my case I had to do this)

You can perform a hard reset by typing *2767*3855# into the hand set (but not necessary.)
When the phone resets type *#1234# into your handset to check your new firmware version. :D

Thats it you are done.

Now with GPRS settings.Type as shown below.

Go to Menu -> Settings -> Network Settings -> Connections.
Create a new connection here with name Vodafone Live!
Acess Name -> portalnmms
Auth type -> Normal
User ID & password -> leave this blank.
Protocol -> HTTP
Home URL -> http://live.vodafone.in
Proxy Address -> 10.10.1.100:9401
Linger time -> 300
Don't touch the Advanced Settings option.

Hello to all the Frustrated users of "THE ALL NEW SAMSUNG STAR & STAR 3G". The reason you are on this page is because you were looking for a way out on HOW TO INSTALL Java Games / Applications on this awesome phone. I personally went thru a HELL trying to figure that out. I tried all the possible ways Google results had to offer.Finally emailed Samsung support who told me to call their helpline (which btw is pathetic) I asked the female there how do i install Java on my phone, she replied "IT CANNOT BE DONE" as the phone did not support 3rd party softwares. I replied but the phone has Google maps, which is 3rd party so how can it not support 3rd party software. To this she did not have any reply & gave me a ref. no. & told me that someone from the tech department will call, which i got only for the person to tell me that for this problem i have to call their service center in Santacruz (Mumbai,India).

So i called this number 66756952 & some guy named Mathew answers the phone. I told him my problem & he is like this cannot be done as the phone does not support 3rd party. If i wanted any other application/games i need to download it from Samsung's website which is paid. I said this doesn make sense, why am i suppose to pay when i get the stuff for free & wouldn't the stuff downloaded from Samsung's website be 3rd party? After a LOOONNNGGG argument with this dumb ass he finally said that he will try to figure out a way to install Java on this phone as he himself did not know how it was to be done.He noted down my number & said he will call me in 2 days time. But i was not satisfied with his assurance & being a IT person myself just couldn't give up. So i continued to figure out a way & luckily after 2 days of that phone call i did tumble upon a forum that had a solution for the same problem but for Samsung Eternity .

I tried it out & EUREKA it worked :) so finally the 3rd day I called the service center & spoke to Mathew & told him that he was suppose to call me, but he didn't. He said he was busy & din get time to do that, I said anyways I have found the way to INSTALL JAVA APPLICATIONS & GAMES ON STAR & Java Apps & Games are running absolutely fine on my phone. I said so just don't give the customers wrong info as 3rd party software don't work. They DO. He said he knows 3rd party software do work on such phone & he had a very good knowledge about it as HE HAD A iPHONE..(lolz)...

I just kept the phone down by saying,"No wonder you don't know anything about you own product."

Anyways that was my experience with the Samsung Customer Support. Now to get on with the cracking of Java in this phone :)

Before we start, I HAVE NOT INVENTED THIS METHOD,NOR DO I TAKE CREDIT FOR IT. I JUST TRIED OUT A METHOD MEANT FOR SOME OTHER PHONE & IT WORKED OUT FINE FOR ME,IF IN THE PROCESS YOU SCREW UP YOUR PHONE IT'S NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY.

Ok, lets start. We will require 3 things

TKFileExplorer
Jar creator (optional, required only if your Java file ".jar" does not have a .jad file.Download here)
Java App/Game you want to install. :)

Step 1 -> Download and install TKFileExplorer from here Also if you haven't installed PC STUDIO or the USB driver, now will be a good time to do that.

Step 2 -> Open TKFileExplorer and go to Settings then choose COM. On Port,
click the drop down menu and choose the only port that is visible (something like port 5/port 6). In my case it was port 8. (IF COM PORT IS NOT PRESENT, TYPE IN MANUALLY.START FROM COM1,COM2.. so on)

NOTE* You must NOT be connected in PC Studio program.

Now click on FILE and CONNECT or in the icon as shown below.

Step 3 -> On the bottom Left of TKFileExplorer, browse through these folders Exe -> Java -> Games.
Now that you are in Games, Create a folder on your machine with the name of the game & paste the .jar & .jad file in that folder.Now go back to TKFileExplorer & browse for that location where you have made the folder right click & Select Download.

Thats it you done for the TKFileExplorer part. Discconect your phone by clicking the icon or by File -> Disconnect.

Now open up your dial pad and enter the following, *#6984125*#.
Choose INTERNALS and enter the following, *#9072641*#.
Now scroll down and choose Storage Settings. Then Update Java DB, followed by update Apps database.
Now you are finished. Go to Menu - Applications -> Games & More. Your newly installed App should be visible!!! :)

Now That you have fixed your JAVA issue, lets jazz up the phone a little bit. Below are some wallpapers i created for my phone.You guys can download it if you like them.

I have made the wallpapers along with the menu image for it.There are some more which i'll upload shortly.

-----------------------------------------UPDATE-----------------------------------------------

Well many users told me that they were not able to see COM ports or TkExplorer crashed while they were using it, so if you are one of them this part is for you.

1st -> Reboot your phone.

2nd -> Uninstall pc studio & delete the .ini file created by TkExplorer,reboot your system & do a fresh install after reboot.

3rd -> Go to Menu ->Settings-> Phone Settings-> PC Connections & select ASK ON CONNECTION -> Save. Now when you connect you will be asked for which type of connection.Choose PC studio & MAKE SURE PC STUDIO APPLICATION IS NOT RUNNING.

4th -> Also I hope you guys are not trying to select multiple files/folder? Just make a folder of one game (should contain its .jar & .jad file) & download that file in the phone in the location I have mentioned ONE AT A TIME FOLDER BY FOLDER.

5th -> Also (I might be stupid to ask this :P ) But does your phone have enough free space, I mean not the addon memory card, the INTERNAL MEMORY.

6th -> Make sure your bluetooth is off or any other application for that matter

7th -> Download this USB modem driver (as last option, for people who still cant get the COM port)

------------------------------------ALTERNATE METHOD------------------------------------
If the above method didn't work for you then this is the alternate one I found on a forum, but you need to have GPRS activated in your phone for this to work.

Download via WAP LITE FTP
Go to m.getjar.com look for an option called Quick Download (at the end of the page). Enter 51799 as the code (thats the code for LITE FTP) -> Download.

Once downloaded connect your phone to PC using your USB cable. Now you can either choose PC studio option or you can choose Mass Storage option. Now once you have decided what option all you need to do is make a folder in your memory card of the games name & paste the .jar & .jad file of the game in memory card.

Now disconnect your phone & start LITE FTP . which should be installed in Menu->Application->Games & more ->Lite Ftp

Once LITE FTP is started go to your memory card & copy that game folder you just created & paste it in the 1st folder which is named "My Private My Photos My games......"

Now open up your dial pad and enter the following, *#6984125*#.
Choose INTERNALS and enter the following, *#9072641*#.
Now scroll down and choose Storage Settings. Then Update Java DB, followed by update Apps database.Update media database.Create AX Dat File

Now you are finished. Go to Menu - Applications -> Games & More. Your newly installed App should be visible!!! :)

Haier H7 Android Phone With At Least Android Version 1.5

The well known Chinese electronics manufacturer, Haier has announced its Haier H7 Android phone in CommunicAsia 2009 in Singapore. Haier H7 is the fourth handset to feature the Android operating system after the HTC dream, Magic and Samsung I7500.

The full touch screen H7 phone will include at least Android version 1.5, but it will preloaded with version 2.0 if the open OS is ready by the time the handset ships out. The Haier H7 phone is featured with a 2.8-inch touch screen display, equipped with a 2-megapixel camera, supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth enabled, has built-in FM radio and integrated with A-GPS navigation.

The Haier H7 is expected to be available in September in France and is priced at $150.

China SciPhone has recently announced its N12 handset which runs on google open source Android operating system. The N12 handset is powered by a 624MHz Marvell Monahands CPU with Qualcomm MSM6246 chipset. According to the report, it is the first Android phone from small manufacturer. The phone has been designed with trackball for easy navigation.

Along with a 3.2-inch touch screen, N12 is also equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera, it boasts A-GPS, supports Wi-Fi and CMMB TV. In addition, it is quad-band GSM device which supports 3G WCDMA data network and Bluetooth enabled.

T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w. To disable 3G Mode in iPhone 3G, go to Settings -> General-> Network and turn off 3G Mode.

Together with 24Kpwn exploit found in iPhone 3GS bootrom, ultrasn0w will be able to be used on the iPhone 3GS for unlockers, without any modifications whatsoever.

NOTE: DO NOT UPGRADE TO 3.1 YET IF YOU WANT THIS UNLOCK.

Wait is over..Windows 7 RTM on July 13th

GeekSmack.net "confirmed" that Windows 7 was set to RTM (release to manufacturing) on July 13, which also coincides with Wzor's unconfirmed rumor last month. A few minutes ago sources close to the company, who wish to remain anonymous, have confirmed to Neowin that Windows 7 is indeed set to RTM on July 13.

After a year of furious beta testing and continuous leaks every other week, Microsoft is finally ready to give Windows 7 the green light to hit the market. Currently the Windows 7 team is working on polishing off the RTM build so that no show-stopper bugs are present in Windows 7. The date, July 13, also coincides with the kickoff of the Worldwide Partner Conference that is taking place in New Orleans.

Note: Don't confuse RTM and GA (General Availability), as these are two totally different phases. RTM in a nutshell is typically the final build that we will see when Windows 7 hits GA later this year (Unless, of course, there's a show-stopper bug found), but is released to manufacturers so they can work out any bugs the software may encounter with hardware devices. General availability is scheduled to launch on October 22, which will give the tech savvy world time to save up money.

So with that said TechNet, MSDN, and a few other partner connections will also be getting the RTM build on July 13. So let the countdown begin!

Based on recent actions by Apple it would appear that the next generation of iPods will be getting cameras. Rumors from around the web are citing independent verification that the iPod will receive a camera which only makes sense as an evolutionary step.

The iPod Touch seems like the most likely candidate to receive the camera as it is currently the top of the line iPod for Apple. Even more so is that the software to take pictures, record video, and edit the film is already written as the software for the iPhone.

TechCrunch is citing a source from within Asia that claims "Apple has placed an order for a massive number of camera modules of the type that they include in the iPhone. These are inexpensive cameras, in the $10 range. And the size of the order, our source says, means they can only be used for one thing - the iPods."

Macrumors has also posted up screen shots of a leaked iPod Touch case that has a hole cut out for the placement of the camera. Even more interesting is that there is also a leaked case for possibly the iPod Nano that also has a hole cut out for possibly a camera too. Remember though that case leaks are not a guaranteed source of information as there were leaks about an iPhone nano that never turned out to be true.

Apple generally releases new iPods in the September timeframe and usually runs a back to school special where buying a laptop nets you a free iPod (this is done to help clear out old inventory). Will Apple add a camera to its iPod line, probably, but which iPods will receive the camera still remains a mystery.

Purplera1n, unrelated to the Dev Team, has announced a solution to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS for both Windows and Intel Mac computers. The jailbreak allows users to download Cydia on their iPhone to install unofficial applications on their device.

The jailbreaking solution provided by purplera1n still does not allow Winterboard to be used as of yet. The method installs an application
called Freeze onto the device; this installs and unpacks Cydia.

Users who install Cydia onto their device can then proceed to install UltraSn0w which was recently released to unlock the iPhone 3G, now unlocks the iPhone 3GS. Users can freely use any service provider using a SIM card on their iPhone without being locked to selected service providers.

Users who have installed the iPhone 3.1 SDK will not be able to unlock their device due to the update in the baseband. The updated baseband in the 3.1 SDK prevents the exploit to unlock your iPhone from working. Users who updated previously may not be able to unlock their iPhone, according to The Dev Team Blog.

Warning: Users who jailbreak or unlock their iPhone may void the warranty and are cautioned to use this software at their own risk; purplera1n RC2 may still be buggy on Windows machines.

Download SMS Timer: A SMS Scheduler Freeware For Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Isn’t it good if your mobile phone will automatically send SMS to someone at a point of time or during alarm of a calendar entry?

Personally, I like this idea very much and I’m glad to have this feature for my Nokia 5800! Although, it’s not a built-in function, there is a Symbian freeware to make this happen.

SMS Timer, kind of SMS scheduler, is developed by MobiMonster and co-hosted by Nokia India website as one of the few Symbian freeware made for Nokia 5800 (or any smart phones running on Symbian OS S60 5th Edition UI).

By using SMS Timer, I can schedule SMS to send out automatically at the specific date and time. The only little defect of SMS Timer is the inability to detect calendar entry with alarm property and automatically schedule SMS for sending according to the calendar reminder category.

How to use SMS Timer to schedule for SMS sending?

The SMS Timer is enabled (running) by default, upon installation complete. To confirm, press Menu key, go to Apps folder and click SMS Timer icon.

For first time, you might prompt to confirm “Auto enable SMS Timer on phone start?” message - Yes or No, is your preference and obviously, the answer is yes if you want the SMS scheduler to continue working even after you reboot the phone for whatever reason.

Next, click Options, go to Status and confirm the SMS Timer services (i.e. the SMS scheduler) is enabled.

Now, go to compose a new SMS as normal and hit the send button. After few seconds, you’ll see a note saying “To schedule this SMS click Schedule, or click Send Now to send immediately.”

So, just click Schedule and you’re asked to define both date and time to send this SMS. After click the Save button, open SMS Timer program again, you should notice the scheduled SMS appears in application window.

Suppose you want to edit the message of a scheduled SMS, double-click it and press Yes to proceed as the “Over-write the existing item and create a new schedule.” note pops up.

To re-schedule a particular scheduled SMS, click to highlight the item then click Options to select Re-schedule (or to delete the scheduled item).

How To Fix Nokia 5800 Expired Certificate Error During SIS Installation?

Got irrtated with "Expired Certificate" on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic? Fix it..!

It's quite annoying “expired certificate” problem that happen when few attempt to install SIS/SISX program files in Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.The Google result suggests me to reset the date of phone to be earlier or later than current date,format the phone with *#7370# secret key followed by changing the phone regional settings to other countries (UK, HK, etc), set “Online Certificate Check” to off, etc.
There are forums and blogs mentioned that the version 10 firmware is well known for this “expired certificate” bug and thus should upgrade to the latest firmware version 11.0.008. However that doesn't solve the problem either..!!

How to Fix "Expired Certificate" on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic :
Step By Step..

Backup all messages, notes, calendar entries, and contacts.

I used Nokia PC Suite to backup all these four components instead of using Nokia 5800 inbuilt backup function, which doesn’t has an option to backup Notes (but I’m not sure the ALL settings will back up the Notes).

Remove the microSD memory card.

When the phone is powered on, don’t simply remove the memory card. Otherwise, the memory card content will likely corrupt.

To remove the microSD card when the Nokia 5800 is switched on, press the power key (the button next to the power charging port), scroll down to locate and select Remove Memory Card, opt “Yes” as the “Removing memory card will close all open applications. Remove anyway?” message is displayed.

Shortly after, the “Remove Memory Card and press OK” message appears, and then the microSD is ready to be unplugged or removed from the dedicated slot.

Notes, both SIM card and microSD card slot are next to each other on the same side (another defect, personally), don’t be careless and end up corrupting the SIM card (if you happen remove SIM card instead of microSD card).

Format the Nokia 5800

Access to touch keypad and enter *#7370# secret code (not so secret, anyway) to restore phone settings to factory default (even the user data and files are deleted).

Next, you’re prompted to enter the Nokia phone lock code. The default is 12345, if this code hasn’t been changed by yourself or any one.

Then, the phone restarts and you’ve to select the country region (just select your own country from the list, in this case), followed by request to enter current date and time.

When the phone is ready, power it off again to re-insert the memory card (for highly safety measure, unless there are nothing important kept in the memory card, e.g. picture, music, documents, etc).

As the phone is switched on again with memory card inserted, the “preparing memory card” message appears.

4. Delete desktop.ini if present.

1. Under Folder Options -> View , select “Show hidden files, folders and drives” and un-check “Hide protected operating system files” so that you can see the hidden desktop.ini files.
2. Open the start orb and at the search type: shell:startup and press Enter. The start menu startup folder will open, where you will find a desktop.ini file. Delete it.
3. Open the start orb and at the search type: shell:common startup and press Enter. The “all users” start menu startup folder will open, where you will find a desktop.ini file. Delete it too.
4. Done. Reboot and the desktop.ini will not appear again.

Well Dev Team has some positive answers for this. The good news is that iPhone Dev Team have successfully Jailbroken iPhone Firmware 3.0 beta version which was distributed at Macworld expo.

“with all of the great stuff lined up for us with the 3.0 OS that Apple described today, many 3G owners may find themselves with itchy update fingers. If you find yourself with access to the 3G IPSW for 3.0 via the iPhone Dev Center program, and you are using yellowsn0w, do not update or restore to that official IPSW. You will lose yellowsn0w and find yourself unable to revert the baseband to get it back.
And for those wondering, yes the 3.0 OS is jailbreakable on all devices. It’s just those using 3G yellowsn0w that have to show some restraint and wait for PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update.”

Above comment from iPhone Dev team makes it clear that Firmware 3.0 is still jailbrekable but do not restore your iPhone 3G to Firmware 3.0 if you want to have unlock capability with yellowsn0w. You need to wait for custom iPhone Firmware 3.0 ipws file created using pwnagetool.

iPhone dev team have wrote a pretty long post and we have tried to exact and summarize the whole post in following points. Before procedding to read this post one thing you have to keep in mind “Do Not QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool if you want to keep unlock ability of your iPhone 3G 2.2.
Update: iPhone Dev Team has Released QuickPWN and PwnageTool to Jailbreak iPhone and iPod Touch with Firmware 2.2.1. Check download links at end of post.
Summary of iPhone Dev Team Updates.
iPhone 3G
1. iPhone Dev Team has not released latest version of PwnageTool or QuickPWN but jailbreaking of iPhone 3G 2.2.1 is definitely possible.
2. Firmware 2.2.1 will update your Baseband version if you try to use vanilla updater straight away with iTunes and possibly you will lose the potential to unlock your iPhone 3G
3. You can restore and upgrade your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1 if you don’t care about Unlocking in future then can use QuickPWN to jailbreak and add cydia installer.

Now its turm to jailbreak iPhone 3G Firmware 2.2.1. iPhone dev team is really fast as it’s just a two days ago when apple had released firmware 2.2.1 for iPhone & iPod and iPhone Dev Team is ready with QuickPWN 2.2.5 and Pwnagetool 2.2.5.

We have all stuff which is necessary for iPhone 3G 2.2.1 jailbreak so let’s start with iPhone firmware 2.2.1 jailbreak process using QuickPWN 2.2.5. Here is small guide for that.You can use this guide to jailbreak your iPod Touch, iPhone 2G, and iPhone 3G where as iPod Touch 2G users need to wait for Redsn0w.

Please Note: iPhone 3G user planning to Unlock iPhone 3G 2.2.1 do not follow this guide you need to use PwnageTool 2.2.5 to Jailbrek iPhone 3G 2.2.1.
You need to have latest iTunes, you can download iTunes from here.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G Firmware 2.2.1 with QuickPWN 2.2.5
1. Download iPhone/ iPod Firmware 2.2.1 and save it on your computer (Preferably create a folder QuickPWN and save in that folder this is for simplicity)
2. Download QuickPWN 2.2.5 latest iPhone firmware 2.2.1 jailbreak tool.
3. Unzip QuickPWN 2.2.5 in a folder created on 1st step.
4. Connect your iPhone/iPod touch to your commuter.
5. iTunes should detect your Devices.
6. Now you can either update iPhone/iPod touch to Firmware 2.2.1 or Restore Firmware 2.2.1. Its better to restore to have fresh & clean firmware installation.
7. Once you have finished with Restoring/Updating iPhone to Firmware 2.2.1 launch QuickPWN 2.2.6 downloaded in step 2.
8. QuickPWN 2.2.5 will automatically detect your iPhone, now use browser and select Firmware 2.2.1 downloaded in step 1.
9. Now QuickPWN 2.2.5 will display a green checkmark if the firmware is correct.
10. Using QuickPWN 2.2.5 install Cydia Installer on your iPhone. select at least Cydia from menu, then click the blue arrow to continue.
11. QuickPWN 2.2.5 will prompt “please make sure your device is connected via USB before continuing” click the blue arrow to continue.
12. QuickPwn 2.2.5 will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once it is in recovery mode you will be ask to press following key sequence.
- Hold the Home button for 5 seconds,
- Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds,
- Then release the Power button while continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode
13. If you followed above steps correctly, QuickPWN 2.2.5 will detect your iPhone in recovery mode and will ask you to “wait while your iPhone is prepared for jailbreaking”.
14 Now wait for QuickPWN 2.2.5 Message “The pwnage process appears to have completed successfully. Please wait for your device to reboot in its newly modified state”.
15. That’s it you have Successfully Jailbreaked your iPhone 3G firmware 2.2.1.

How to Downgrade iPhone 2.2.1 to iPhone 2.2 (Firmware 2.2.1 to Firmware 2.2)
1. Downlaod iPhone Firmware 2.2 and save it on your hard drive.
2. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or Windows machine and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. (read instruction of How to Put iPhone in DFU Mode if itunes doesn’t detect your iPhone)
For Mac Users
3. In the Summary Tab, Hold down Option and press the “Restore” button and select iPhone Firmware 2.2 file (Don’t press just restore button read below note)
For Windows Users
3. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the “Restore” button and select iPhone Firmware 2.2 file (Don’t press just restore button read below note)
4. After restoring download QuickPWN2.2 and use it to jailbreak your firmware 2.2. or use yellowsn0w to unlock iPhone 3G 2.2

According to Russian publication Wzor, Microsoft finalised Internet Explorer 8 on February 21st.
The final build that was prepared and passed to internal staff and partners is 8.0.6001.18691. Microsoft is reportedly readying this build for distribution via TechNet/MSDN and Connect before a general release to web.
The software giant released a final test build (RC1) last month before readying the RTM last week. According to Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 includes the following enhancements:

Expecting RC atleast??

Despite Windows 7's release looming over the horizon, ZDNet has stated that Steve Ballmer himself said, "Office 14 will not be this year," in an interview with analysts at the Wall Street Journal. Keen readers will notice that Ballmer called it Office 14, and not Office System 2009 which it could possibly be named on release.
Many people thought that Microsoft would time the new Office revision along with Windows 7's release, as many businesses prefer to upgrade to a new OS and a new Office suite at the same time, but Ballmer has dashed all thoughts of this happening. However, it is still quite possible Microsoft may delay Windows 7 to bring the two releases to the public simultaneously. Undoubtedly many people would be rather upset if Microsoft decided to hold back a major operating system to wait for an office suite, but nobody knows for sure what will happen yet.
ZDNet's report said that a beta of Office 14 is expected this coming summer, with that news coming from Microsoft sources, and Microsoft released an Alpha version to selected customers in January. Microsoft is reportedly aiming to release Office 14 and SharePoint Server 14 alongside each other.

Windows Mobile 6.5 is slowly coming up to a public release, however discussions have already begun about the next iteration; Windows Mobile 7. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said that the 7th iteration of Microsoft's popular mobile OS will be released to manufacturing next year.
WM Power User reported the news, which was announced at a Microsoft conference call earlier today, and was stated alongside Ballmer's thoughts that the growing popularity of smartphones is going to greatly help WinMo in the future, despite the economy woes at the moment. Ballmer also said that Windows Mobile will get more and more shared technology with Windows, bringing in technology such as, "browsers, presentation services, and even, in the future, the kernel, and that the amount of shared technology will only increase over time." Perhaps by presentation services, he is referring to Silverlight.
Lastly, Ballmer confirmed that Microsoft will not be producing a Microsoft Phone, but only sticking to the phone operating systems. For more information, keep your eyes peeled as more Windows Mobile information is released.

Windows 7 RC is set for April 10, 2009 and what Sinofsky had mentioned regarding the RC release "recently we've seen people talk about 'RC Builds' and the like. First, all builds since the beta are RC builds since by definition that is the next milestone. But by far the most humorous element has been that the build numbers blogged about are higher than our current build. Today's build is 7046, but it hasn't completed yet :-)"

Another Test Update..perhaps..

Following on from the Internet Explorer 8 update that Microsoft released for Windows 7 Beta a day ago, another update has been released targeting application compatibility.
Judging by these two updates released, Microsoft is progressing nicely, and the most recent update targets mainly games that did not run before hand, or had to be opened via compatibility-mode. Interestingly, Microsoft didn't state which applications were targeted in this update, but it is of no doubt that users will find out soon enough.
If you're currently having problems with gaming, or have had problems with it, in the Windows 7 Beta, install these updates and post in the comments to show which games now work, or still don't. As Ars Technica is reporting, this update have no affiliation what-so-ever with the Windows 7 test updates that have been released. In order to update Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7, head into the Start menu and go to All Programs, followed by Windows Update. According to Ars Technica, these fixes are the ones that are available in the Internet Explorer 8 RC1, that was released for Vista and XP to the public about a month ago.

Windows 7 RTM-Release in Sept or Oct 2009

The final edition of Windows 7, which commonly known as RTM (release-to-manufacturing) version, may be released and start shipping as early as in September or October 2009, months earlier that what Microsoft officially predicts on when Windows 7 will hit the market, January 2010.

According to Ray Chen, president of Taipei-based Compal Electronics Inc.，the maker of laptop personal computers for Hewlett-Packard Co. and Acer Inc, Windows 7 should be released on late September or early October according to current planning, as reported by Bloomberg.

According to Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, Microsoft has decided to skip Windows 7 Beta 2 to go direct to RC (release candidate) development milestone for Windows 7, which is expected to release in April 2009, paving the way for the Windows 7 to go on prime time showcase on September or October.

In fact, Lotta Bath, from the Microsoft Sweden Partner team, has published a blog post which has since been taken down at http://blogs.msdn.com/partnerblogg/archive/2009/01/30/n-gra-h-ndelser-inf-r-lanseringen-av-windows-7.aspx, that specified deadlines to he upcoming Windows 7 releases, mapping a variety of events that would lead to the launch of Windows 7. The Windows 7 release roadmap date is said to be given by Michael Bohlin, Windows product manager.

According to Lotta Bath, Windows 7 RC will be released early April, after the CeBIT event, while Windows 7 RTM is set to release on October 3, at 11:10 AM. Microsoft itself will probably install Windows 7 from May 31st. There will be lots of events and presentations for business launch and consumer launch, which will run parallel during the 3Q 2009, including Windows 7 Summit, and during the lead up to the official launch of Windows 7. Some events will happen on 7th of every month too. However, the boxed retail version of Windows 7 is expected to hit the store only by February 2010.

43 Web Design Mistakes we often commit

There are several lists of web design mistakes around the Internet. Most of them, however, are the “Most common” or “Top 10” mistakes. Every time I crossed one of those lists I would think to myself: “Come on, there must be more than 10 mistakes…”. Then I decided to write down all the web design mistakes that would come into my head; within half an hour I had over thirty of them listed. Afterwards I did some research around the web and the list grew to 43 points.

The next step was to write a short description for each one, and the result is the collection of mistakes that you will find below. Some of the points are common sense, others are quite polemic. Most of them apply to any website though, whether we talk about a business entity or a blog. Enjoy!

1. The user must know what the site is about in seconds: attention is one the most valuable currencies on the Internet. If a visitor can not figure what your site is about in a couple of seconds, he will probably just go somewhere else. Your site must communicate why I should spend my time there, and FAST!

2. Make the content scannable: this is the Internet, not a book, so forget large blocks of text. Probably I will be visiting your site while I work on other stuff so make sure that I can scan through the entire content. Bullet points, headers, subheaders, lists. Anything that will help the reader filter what he is looking for.

3. Do not use fancy fonts that are unreadable: sure there are some fonts that will give a sophisticated look to your website. But are they readable? If your main objective is to deliver a message and get the visitors reading your stuff, then you should make the process comfortable for them.

4. Do not use tiny fonts: the previous point applies here, you want to make sure that readers are comfortable reading your content. My Firefox does have a zooming feature, but if I need to use on your website it will probably be the last time I visit it.

5. Do not open new browser windows: I used to do that on my first websites. The logic was simple, if I open new browser windows for external links the user will never leave my site. WRONG! Let the user control where he wants the links to open. There is a reason why browsers have a huge “Back” button. Do not worry about sending the visitor to another website, he will get back if he wants to (even porn sites are starting to get conscious regarding this point lately…).

6. Do not resize the user’s browser windows: the user should be in control of his browser. If you resize it you will risk to mess things up on his side, and what is worse you might lose your credibility in front of him.

7. Do not require a registration unless it is necessary: lets put this straight, when I browse around the Internet I want to get information, not the other way around. Do not force me to register up and leave my email address and other details unless it is absolutely necessary (i.e. unless what you offer is so good that I will bear with the registration).

8. Never subscribe the visitor for something without his consent: do not automatically subscribe a visitor to newsletters when he registers up on your site. Sending unsolicited emails around is not the best way to make friends.

9. Do not overuse Flash: apart from increasing the load time of your website, excessive usage of Flash might also annoy the visitors. Use it only if you must offer features that are not supported by static pages.

10. Do not play music: on the early years of the Internet web developers always tried to successfully integrate music into websites. Guess what, they failed miserably. Do not use music, period.

11. If you MUST play an audio file let the user start it: some situations might require an audio file. You might need to deliver a speech to the user or your guided tour might have an audio component. That is fine. Just make sure that the user is in control, let him push the “Play” button as opposed to jamming the music on his face right after he enters the website.

12. Do not clutter your website with badges: first of all, badges of networks and communities make a site look very unprofessional. Even if we are talking about awards and recognition badges you should place them on the “About Us” page.

13. Do not use a homepage that just launches the “real” website: the smaller the number of steps required for the user to access your content, the better.

14. Make sure to include contact details: there is nothing worse than a website that has no contact details. This is not bad only for the visitors, but also for yourself. You might lose important feedback along the way.

15. Do not break the “Back” button: this is a very basic principle of usability. Do not break the “Back” button under any circumstance. Opening new browser windows will break it, for instance, and some Javascript links might also break them.

16. Do not use blinking text: unless your visitors are coming straight from 1996, that is.

17. Avoid complex URL structures: a simple, keyword-based URL structure will not only improve your search engine rankings, but it will also make it easier for the reader to identify the content of your pages before visiting them.

18. Use CSS over HTML tables: HTML tables were used to create page layouts. With the advent of CSS, however, there is no reason to stick to them. CSS is faster, more reliable and it offers many more features.

19. Make sure users can search the whole website: there is a reason why search engines revolutionized the Internet. You probably guessed it, because they make it very easy to find the information we are looking for. Do not neglect this on your site.

20. Avoid “drop down” menus: the user should be able to see all the navigation options straight way. Using “drop down” menus might confuse things and hide the information the reader was actually looking for.

21. Use text navigation: text navigation is not only faster but it is also more reliable. Some users, for instance, browse the Internet with images turned off.

22. If you are linking to PDF files disclose it: ever clicked on a link only to see your browser freezing while Acrobat Reader launches to open that (unrequested) PDF file? That is pretty annoying so make sure to explicit links pointing to PDF files so that users can handle them properly.

23. Do not confuse the visitor with many versions: avoid confusing the visitor with too many versions of your website. What bandwidth do I prefer? 56Kbps? 128Kbps? Flash or HTML? Man, just give me the content!

24. Do not blend advertising inside the content: blending advertising like Adsense units inside your content might increase your click-through rate on the short term. Over the long run, however, this will reduce your readership base. An annoyed visitor is a lost visitor.

25. Use a simple navigation structure: sometimes less is more. This rule usually applies to people and choices. Make sure that your website has a single, clear navigation structure. The last thing you want is to confuse the reader regarding where he should go to find the information he is looking for.

26. Avoid “intros”: do not force the user to watch or read something before he can access to the real content. This is plain annoying, and he will stay only if what you have to offer is really unique.

27. Do not use FrontPage: this point extends to other cheap HTML editors. While they appear to make web design easier, the output will be a poorly crafted code, incompatible with different browsers and with several bugs.

28. Make sure your website is cross-browser compatible: not all browsers are created equal, and not all of them interpret CSS and other languages on the same way. Like it or not, you will need to make your website compatible with the most used browsers on the market, else you will lose readers over the long term.

29. Make sure to include anchor text on links: I confess I used to do that mistake until some time ago. It is easier to tell people to “click here”. But this is not efficient. Make sure to include a relevant anchor text on your links. It will ensure that the reader knows where he is going to if he clicks the link, and it will also create SEO benefits for the external site where the link is pointing.

30. Do not cloak links: apart from having a clear anchor text, the user must also be able to see where the link is pointing on the status bar of his browser. If you cloak your links (either because they are affiliate ones or due to other reasons) your site will lose credibility.

31. Make links visible: the visitor should be able to recognize what is clickable and what is not, easily. Make sure that your links have a contrasting color (the standard blue color is the optimal most of the times). Possibly also make them underlined.

32. Do not underline or color normal text: do not underline normal text unless absolutely necessary. Just as users need to recognize links easily, they should not get the idea that something is clickable when in reality it is not.

33. Make clicked links change color: this point is very important for the usability of your website. Clicked links that change color help the user to locate himself more easily around your site, making sure that he will not end up visiting the same pages unintentionally.

34. Do not use animated GIFs: unless you have advertising banners that require animation, avoid animated GIFs. They make a site look unprofessional and detract the attention from the content.

35. Make sure to use the ALT and TITLE attributes for images: apart from having SEO benefits the ALT and TITLE attributes for images will play an important role for blind users.

36. Do not use harsh colors: if the user is getting a headache after visiting your site for 10 consecutive minutes, you probably should pick a better color scheme. Design the color palette around your objectives (i.e. deliver a mood, let the user focus on the content, etc.).

37. Do not use pop ups: this point refers to pop ups of any kind. Even user requested pop ups are a bad idea given the increasing amount of pop blockers out there.

38. Avoid Javascript links: those links execute a small Javascript when the user clicks on them. Stay away from them since they often create problems for the user.

39. Include functional links on your footer: people are used to scrolling down to the footer of a website if they are not finding a specific information. At the very least you want to include a link to the Homepage and possibly a link to the “Contact Us” page.

40. Avoid long pages: guess what, if the user needs to scroll down forever in order to read your content he will probably just skip it altogether. If that is the case with your website make it shorter and improve the navigation structure.

41. No horizontal scrolling: while some vertical scrolling is tolerable, the same can not be said about horizontal scrolling. The most used screen resolution nowadays is 1024 x 768 pixels, so make sure that your website fits inside it.

42. No spelling or grammatical mistakes: this is not a web design mistake, but it is one of the most important factors affecting the overall quality of a website. Make sure that your links and texts do not contain spelling or grammatical mistakes.

43. If you use CAPTCHA make sure the letters are readable: several sites use CAPTCHA filters as a method of reducing spam on comments or on registration forms. There is just one problem with it, most of the times the user needs to call his whole family to decipher the letters.
